✷ Time constraints; design bench for one week, make bench in two weeks, and find leather for seat in Copenhagen within 3 days.
research
study abroad in copenhagen denmark
area of study: Furniture Design
During my study abroad in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, I visited renowned furniture factories, showrooms, and studios, immersing myself in the art of furniture design.
Inspired by these experiences, I designed the Wayward bench to support my jewelry-making craft. Using the specifications of my jeweler's bench and considering my own ergonomic needs, I created a piece that prioritizes both functionality and user comfort. Like Børge Mogensen, my design aims to marry form with practicality, enhancing the user's experience. Børge Mogensen was known to create furniture for his own home before becoming the father of modern danish furniture.

Material matters
Inspired by the rich traditions of Danish furniture crafts(wo)manship, I selected maple as the primary material for the Wayward bench. Known for its strength, fine texture, and light color, maple has long been favored by Danish designers for its versatility in both traditional and modern furniture. The wood was treated with a lye soap finish, encouraging it’s natural beauty to age like a fine wine.
For the seat of the Wayward bench, I opted for raw, untreated leather. This choice reflects a commitment to authenticity and natural materials. Raw leather offers a unique texture and develops a rich patina over time, enhancing its character with each use.
